At Oak Valley Animal Health we love taking care of equines as well as pets and ruminants.
Equine Care
Horses should have regular wellness care, including a yearly exam and regular vaccines to keep them happy and healthy, just like your family pet or other animal. We seem to be seeing more frequent metabolic diseases in equines, so bringing them in for regular check-ups is very important so we can catch those things early.
Wellness Care
The annual exam is an important part of wellness care for your equine. We will assess your equine's general health and overall condition. As part of that annual exam, we’ll also make sure your animal is on track with vaccinations, deworming, and dental care.
Equine Dental Care
One of the most important things with equines is having regular dental check-ups. Did you know that horses chew side to side and that unlike humans, their teeth continue to grow throughout their life? This means that with equines, regular dental care is very important. Proper and regular dental care can keep good chewing surfaces and can also prevent and manage pain. Because of the unique dentistry needs of equine, it is important to do regular tooth-shaping maintenance. Fortunately, we have a new horse dentistry tool (a horse float) that works for horses, as well as miniature ponies and donkeys!
We are happy to see your equines at our Red Oak facility or we can come to you at your home or farm. We have equipment that allows us to see our large animal friends.
Ruminant Care
Oak Valley Animal Health knows that caring for your ruminants has different challenges than caring for family pets, and we are here to help.
We have excellent in-house facilities for cattle and other large animals. In fact, we can care for many types of ruminants beyond cattle—including goats, llamas, alpacas, and sheep. When it comes to animals, we do it all. We would love to talk with you about tailoring things to your herd’s needs.
When serving you for your large animal needs, you can come to us in Red Oak or we can visit you on-site, whichever is most convenient for you and your animals. We can provide many diagnostics for these animals in-house and also have the capability to send things off-site when necessary. We can do general blood work and fecal testing in our clinics.
Ruminant Wellness Care
Just like with any animal, regular check ups will help keep your ruminants healthy. We will also talk with you about nutrition and keeping your animals up to date on vaccines. All of these things will help to keep your herd healthy.
Ruminant Pregnancy Care
We have a hydraulic shoot and a maternity pen for large animals, as well as surgical facilities. Our ultrasound capabilities can help check early pregnancies, which allows you to catch them sooner and be more informed. In the fall and spring, we stay busy processing calves and making sure the newest members of your herd are healthy. We are also available for castrating and dehorning, as well as the Iowa Green Tag program for your herd.
For questions about ruminant care or herd health, or if it is time to have us take a look at your horse, donkey, miniature horse, or other equine, please call us or fill out an appointment request form.
